iPhone 3G Reviews: Hardware, Software and Apps

Here's our Gizmodo iPhone 3G Review, iPhone Firmware 2.0 Review and our still updating iPhone App Review Marathon (89 apps total).

iPhone Apps

Our Favorite iPhone Apps

After two weeks of using the iPhone 2.0 full time, each of us here have developed a fondness for a handful of apps that we can't live without. Some of them show up in just about everyone's top five (Yelp, Facebook), and some of them we'll just attribute to the guy being a weirdo (MooCowMusic's Band). Here they are in an order that I deem most appropriate. Basically, the ones I like are up front. More »

LG Seizes Bikini Phone As Opportunity To Put Models in Bikinis

What a brilliant idea by someone at LG to name their KF600—a phone we've covered before—the Bikini. What better way can you think of, besides more money, to convince your models to pose in Bikinis? None. None better. Just when we thought Samsung had the upper hand on shoehorning Korean ladies into product photos, LG goes and takes it to another level. Will we see a subsequent "Samsung Topless" retaliation? Can we, please? More »

The $2000 DanBall Relieves Stress, Keeps Typing Fingers Limbered Up

I'll be the first to admit that having someone massage your hands is relaxing, especially after a long day of typing away on a computer. If you agree, a finger massage from this DanBall device may be just the thing to help melt away your stress. According to the manufacturer, it can give you up to 50 one minute shiatsu finger massages on a single charge, help grow your fingernails with infrared rays and keep you relaxed with a soothing melody and LED light show. Sounds like a great way to keep the typing fingers limbered up or keep you on your bowling game, but for $2000 I'm pretty sure that I can find some better ways to unwind. High-tech perverts

Flasher Goes Hi-Tech By Projecting His Junk on Buildings (NSFW)

Jaime del Val isn't your average flasher. Old-fashioned flashers lurk around in trenchcoats, praying on women walking the streets alone—but not Jamie. Nope, he is a new breed—a high-tech pervert that strapped a projector to his shoulders, powered it with a car battery and proceeded to walk the streets of Madrid, projecting his "manhood" on buildings for all to see. Why? Because he claims it's a "means of power." But, as you will see after the break, I'm pretty sure that he is trying to compensate for certain...shortcomings. More »

iPhone Battery

Brando's Power Station Holds 1000mAh, Title For Cheapest iPhone Battery

We're not sure if Brando's version of the external iPhone battery pack bests the others we've seen in performance, but it's definitely the cheapest by far. At $25, it's a whole $18 cheaper than the iPhoneck, and half as costly as Macally's PowerLink. Is it any good? No clue yet. But it's cheap, which is all some people care about. [Brando]

iPhone 2.1 Firmware Has Tiny Glimmer of Copy-and-Paste Shining Inside

When Apple said it didn't care about cut and paste on the iPhone, it's possible that it meant "not right now, but soon, possibly." Because over at MacNN they're reporting that the developer firmware 2.1 may have hints of copy-paste within it. "In exploring the Localizable.strings entry under English.lproj in the current iPhone WebKit framework, there are entries for several commands the firmware does not currently support, including cutting, copying and pasting," apparently. There's also a reference to a "mobile radio" but whether that pertains to internet radio functionality for the phone is impossible to divine. [MacNN via Macrumors]

Yahoo Music Shutting Down DRM Servers To Finish Transition to Rhapsody

In a continuation of Yahoo Music's move to send their customers over to Rhapsody, YM's shutting down their DRM servers as of September 30. Unlike when MSN's Music servers shut down and then re-opened, it's very unlikely that Yahoo's will do the same, seeing as there's a process to convert your existing Yahoo Music tunes over to Rhapsody. You'll have to transfer the songs before the deadline, or else all you'll be hearing is the sound of yourself weeping over your lost tunes. [LA Times]

Hit and run

Letterman Mows Down a Pleo with a $1,000 R/C Monster Truck

Last night, David Letterman had some expensive toys at his disposal. He checked out the Pleo, then he got to test drive a crazy, $1,000 remote control monster truck. Naturally, the docile, innocent Pleo wasn't going to fare well in such an environment. Oh, Letterman, you cruel bastard!

How To Disable iPhone's Backup Process

We've noted in our iPhone 2.0 software review that iTunes' full image backup of your iPhone when you've made changes to what apps you've got installed can take a really long time. We're talking tens of minutes. If you're the type of person that doesn't really store anything important on your phone that can't be reinstated from your contact list or calendar or elsewhere on your computer, Zero Logic found that you can actually skip this process. British Artist Paints Using RC Cars As His Brushes

And you thought Etch-a-Sketch was tough. Ian Cook made this portrait of a Chevy Camaro by soaking the wheels of remote controlled cars in paint and then painstakingly driving them around on his canvas. He also uses full-size tires to fill in large blocks of color, but still, the results are pretty amazing—if you've ever tried to ambush your unsuspecting cat with an RC you know how tricky precision maneuvering can be. He's currently camped out at the London Motor Show doing portraits of cars (meta!). The work is especially admirable when you see it coming together in this video, stroke by radio-controlled stroke. Eee PC's to Get "Whole Day" Batteries, Says Rumor

Not content with muddying-up the waters of the Eee brand, Asustek is apparently keen to "push out software and hardware upgrades every month to fill gaps in the netbook market." Though that sounds like a bad idea, at least one benefit may come of it: according to Digitimes, one of the upcoming products will be a "whole day" battery for the Eee UMPCs. Digitimes also talks about an "internet storage" solution, and cooperation with European telecoms vendors. Interesting stuff, though since it seems slightly unsubstantiated, we'll wait 'til we hear something concrete to believe it. [Digitimes]

Norman Foster Designs Yet Another Amazing Yacht We Will Never Enjoy

This is the YachtPlus 40 Signature Series, a 134-foot ship designed by architects Foster + Partners. Unlike other superyachts, this one is not just a stunning rendering, but it's now being constructed in Italy and should be available to buy for a whole load of dollars in September. I would say at least 35 dollars. Even more. According to the manufacturers, its design offers more space than any ship in its class. Loaded with features, the interior looks as good as the exterior. Go ahead and drool. More »

The Shining Recreated with WowWee Robots

In the above video, the famous tricycle scene from The Shining is reenacted with a WowWee Tribot and a couple of Femisapiens who meet some gruesome demises. It's pretty awesome. After the jump, check the original scene for comparison's sake. More »

Thanko's Cooling Fan Keyboard Cools Your Over-Heated Wrists

Bless those guys at Thanko—they've been wondering what else to apply fan-cooling tech to, and have come up with this keyboard that cools something you never thought needed it: your wrists. The gizmo has three fans built into the wrist-rest area of a standard USB keyboard, ready to puff sweet air at your sweaty wrists at the flick of a switch. Bizarre. And if you want one, you'd better have really hot, sweaty arms indeed 'cause this thing takes up two USB ports. It looks pretty sturdy, mind you, and is out in Japan for about $62. [FarEastGizmos]

Convicted Spammer Escapes Prison, Murders Family, Kills Himself

Well, this is terrible. Edward Davidson, the "Spam King" who was sentenced to 21 months in jail and ordered to pay $714,139 in restitution to the IRS for spamming and tax evasion, escaped from prison with the aid of his wife only to then turn a gun on her, his 3-year old daughter, a teenage girl and finally himself. Lego Beijing Olympics Doesn't Include Tibetan Monk Minifigs

It was only a matter of time before someone turned the Beijing Olympics installations into Lego. Our friends at Brothers Brick discovered the landmarks—like the Nest Sports Ground or the iconic Water Cube—Lego'ized by the Honk Kong Lego Users Group. The attention to detail is particularly impressive in the high resolution images. More »
