John Nilsson is the man behind the jDome, an invention that will give gamers a massive 180-degree field of vision instead of the usual 15 to 20 degrees they get from their monitors. All you do is put the jDome in front of a projector, mirror the image in the projector, change the Field of View and you're good to go. Nilsson's already patented his idea, and he's looking for donations to get the jDome into production—he reckons it will cost between $125 and $200. [jDome]

OR, just OR, I could make my own with old bedsheets... just saying.
the "yay" dome sounds like a good concept, not really what interests me
Looks interesting, despite many questions I would have about image quality, usable field of view and light falloff at the edges. But it has great potential and I commend his efforts. Still, I think he's overlooking a much more lucrative market than gaming...anyone for immersive, you-are-there-style porn?
* hoots'n'holler heard loudly round the globe *
I thought so.
is the projector comes bundled with the jDome? haha
I wish they would make a periphial that is like the virtual boy (without 3d effects) that you can either hook up to your tv or your computer, but still allow people to see the screen...it would be bad ass for COD or MP3.
While I love the idea of this thing, the execution is all wrong. Either the games would have to be made with the image distortion caused by angle to the projector on every point off the center of the dome, or the projector would have to compensate. As it is now, the edges of the image are stretched like Rosie O'Donnell's thighs.
Put dome over bed, use for Pr0n... need I say more... just one thing, can I use windex to get the smears off this thing?
Did he say gayDome the first two times?
This was a powerup in Marathon (at least the first one AFAIK). I loved it, since it was exactly 180-degrees, so you could see people standing to either side of you as well as in front. Gave you a cool feeling of motion while moving, too.
This...looks really blurry. :\
Too bad it has so much wide angle distortion, especially noticeable when moving. If it was more realistic I'd be impressed.
@VirreVojj: Funny you say that, I heard it too. But, no. It's J-Dome.
* sigh *
Jemaine: Nope, you can't tame the J-Dog
Sally: What's the "J-Dog"
Jemaine: Well, that's me. I'm the J-Dog.
Sally: Where's that from?
Jemaine: It's street language. You know, you just take the first letter of your name and put "Dog" on the end of it, and all the other dogs sort of respect you.
Sally: Okay, I thought it was from a kids book or something.
It looks like your constantly going through a wormhole. And who wants to stand to up to play it?
OMG all I hear is GAYDOME. "I would like you all to have your own Gay Dome." Let me show you the Gay Dome" "Would you like to combine our Domes to make Gay Sphere?"
yaydome!
I don't see why people are complaining about it. Firstly, it allows players to be more interactive with their game by providing them a wider scope of view that simulates the way we see in real life. I honestly would rather have a wider feel of vision and feel like I'm part of the game than a computer monitor, but the only thing I'd be worried about is the quality of the image from the projector. Secondly, for those complaining about standing up, "PULL UP A CHAIR!"
@evangelistc01: But the JChair hasn't been announced yet. :(
Gaydom? Nothing against gays but it just sounded funny when he kept repeating those words with his serious expressions.
125-200 dollars? Damn his margins must rock. If he ever goes public I would buy into his IPO, but as tehronin said, "I could make my own with old bedsheets... just saying."
Crysis FTW!!!
I really don't see what is so impressive with this hyped up, over dramatic presentation of an effect I could easily achieve by sticking a fish bowel over my head. And he rented a camera? For a YouTube video? AND spent how much of his time and monies on those spectacular 3D examples? Wow.
Looks like a smaller version if the imax theater at Ontario place.
180 degrees of hd porn?
@bradc2755: FOTC FTW!
Cool, love to try something likes this.
Just, not that one...
stretched out borders like that maybe even just narrow your clear field of view.
But I liked that you post a swede on Gizmodo, hopefully he have learned better English If he ever make it into production...
Why not run a transform on the screen to counter the distortion of the dome. If you made the game look "fisheye" then it would look normal when projected on the dome.
I'm assuming(bad...never assume)that the device is foldable/portable? A lot of people live in apartments with narrow door-frames. ...English is pretty much the de-facto trade language of the world (until something else replaces it) I understood this guy perfectly.
Where the hell is my ultrarealistic full immersion high density tactile virtual reality? It's 2008, God (tm) damn it, and this is what I get?
it sounds as if he always says "Gay-Dome" ;-)
@CarrollArion: "...an effect I could easily achieve by sticking a fish bowel over my head."
I sincerely hope you meant bowl. Unless of course you really do like stuffing your head up a fish's rectum. In which case our dinner date is definitely off.
I am sorry, but I can't even start caring about the concept until Swedish (Yeah my friends, im looking at you!!) realize that their largest market (US) want people presenting products in ENGLISH!!! and not the eurotrash-swede version!
It is really not that hard or expensive to get someone (Hey, why not me!!) that is a Swede and live in the U.S. to showcase a product without people thinking its a 'gaydome' or a hobby project!!
Really, how cool does it sound to own a product that is presented by someone that has not even the most basic grasp of the language??
@mikehtiger: Well at $6k a pop (Prototype) you sure as hell don't throw it out!!
@Chamellion: you mean a "ghey" dome
Summary:
1. Fisheye Blows
2. Engineers never should be on marketing videos
3. Please PLEASE buy a larger shirt
Definitely sounds like he's saying "gay dome" - think I'll pass based on that alone.
I'm ashamed for being Swedish when I see that video. His English is just so bad. It's actually a serious problem here, many swedes don't undertand how bad their English is so instead of hiring a translator they think they can get by themselves. A common problem for Swedish politicans. But then again, all politicians are problems...
However, I would have prefered subtitles since even I had trouble hearing what he said.
I'm still looking for the immersive environment of The World from .hack//sign. I dunno about an FPS, but I'd definitely go for the RPG.
interesting concept - but I think that the distortion in your peripheral vision would be a game breaker - let's face it, things don't look like that unless you're James Bond in one of those g-force thingys.
I would think that if you could rig up a projector on each side (along with the one in front) then you could get a clean non-fisheye type of view.
Of course, that'd cost alot more - but this is a good first step.
This has been done before and it looked much better than this.
Video is no longer available.
Now, make it a lightgun game, and I'm sold.
Except shooting outside the screen to reload...not so much a good idea. :P
... needs a few more projectors to compensate for the FOV distortions.
Exact repeat of mid-90's projects. Patent will be narrow--go look at SIGGRAPH expositions for prior art.
this is excellent, since he patented the whole thing, i can just look at the design and make my own
yay capitalism!
the Jdome?
this guy talks and thinks like a douche bag so therefore he IS a douche bag...and the thing gave me a headache
GOD HE'S DREADFUL TO LISTEN TO. Aside from that, the idea's alright, I personally wouldn't want to buy it since it would take up so much space and not to mention it looks ugly as an object in my apartment.
Meh, unless it actually improves your vision of the game, then it's useless. He's just stretching the default view out to accomodate 180 degrees of vision rather than adding extra screen space to the viewable area and stretching that out. This system would actually give you a disadvantage because you'd be seeing less of the game in focus.
It's a nice concept, but it just needs a bit more polishing.
now, if they had a way to detect distortion to see if you're TOUCHING it, then i'd see a good argument for this
you can't add things to the game that weren't already there. Like when it zooms out and shows more of the gun, and that random ass dude standing next to him in the "Ghey-Dome". Only jugalos and spoiled retards are going to buy this shit thinking it's cool, and the novelty will wear off very quickly.
Guys, he has a swedish accent. Get over it.
Er, no thanks, fish eye gaming, not for me.........
w00t, he used SketchUp for the demonstration. My favorite 3d tool -

@bradc2755: FOTC FTW!!!!!!!
Abbreviations FTW!!!
Quick. Nobody stand still.
I think the guy in the video killed his product by nicknaming it the "gay-Dome." Watch, that nickname will follow the J-Dome and will NOT help this already questionable product.
Out of curiosity I just typed in gaydome.com into my web browser. Y'all should check it out! ;) (NSFW!!!!!!!!)
