Oh, my.. I was just at CosCo and they were out of 8oz coffee cups. I think that they are upgrading to a better cup. Perhaps the rumors of a hybrid paper-foam cup are true.

... They are all so sold out on the website. This is such a big story.

If you take a look at where the stock was 3 months ago, I think they can take a temporary hit before massive gains. Besides, with the iPhone 2, it's bound to break $200 again.

I swear to god, can we please stop reporting on this? Every tech blog I read its "ZOMG NO MOAR iPHONEZ!!!!1!" Maybe they just sold out, and maybe a shipment got delayed, and maybe y'all need to stop getting your information from Kevin Rose.

I thought Apple would have to pass the new 3g phone by the FCC before launching. Surely it can't be that imminent?

usually when stuff sells out/delayed, they (any company including apple) just change the ship date. So this is significant because it is a very strong sign 3g iphone might be coming earlier than expected. Thats why it is being reported.

and I didnt think it was a "brilliant" move until I read that its purpose might not be to increase demand, but to prevent people from buying right before an upgrade, which IS very nice and uncharacteristic of apple.

@DeadWriter: Those 3G coffee cups are still in it's testing stages, some customers are complaining that they don't work as well as the cups, poor structure and a lot of leakage. Wait until the the CDK comes out, then it'll be all better and not locked down the Folger's brand.

I wish tech journalists wouldn't try to be financial journalists. It's just embarrassing.

There are a number of much better reasons for this shortage which are:

1) Supply chain balls up.
2) Stock wind down.

My money's on 2).

Plus to suggest that Apple are trying to protect their customers by stopping them buying and old model is probably the singularly most funny thing I've read this week.

It will probably ship around the same time as firmware 2.0 (1.2)

They switch when the new product comes out, not a month before. Also O2 confirmed that when stocks had run out the a new supply of units was inbound. Which has now arrived.

People, apple does *not* sell out of anything on the website. If there are ever stock shortages, the status of an item changes to "Ships in 1 - 3 weeks."

This is why this is news-- Because it's completely unprecedented.

What they're doing is trading off secrecy to protect people from buying the first-gen iPhone in its last days before its successor is unveiled. I mean, if you'd bought an iPhone and it was upgraded to v.2 days after your purchase, wouldn't you be pissed?

Ummm...doesn't apple often refund you the difference if you bought just before a price drop? And aren't Apple customers (especially iPhone owners) notorious for going nuts when the price does drop or when features are added?

Isn't Apple really just protecting itself? So they don't have to take back a bunch of 2-week old iPhones in exchange for the new version?

@hanbush: 3G is actually much more common in Europe. Its fairly standard. But yes compared to India we are spoiled with 3G

I think Apple will announce the 3G phone Tuesday and be available for pre order. The phone wont ship until the week before the SDK show, just in time for us to download all the new games and software.

I guess they decided that as they can't be mysterious about it so they might as well leave suggestions to wen it will come out.

The grand opening of the world's largest Apple Store is next Thursday in Boston. Could be a surprise announcement there.

I think apple might not announce a 3G at the WWDC, instead, they are producing iphone with firmware 2.0, that could explain the Currently Unavailable too.

My opinion, 3G iphone will be release before WWDC. WWDC is for developers not a event to introduce new Hardware, WWDC will be all about the SDK & the new .Mac with push email, calendar & contacts & Microsoft exchange, Remember the theme (Two bridges)

That's definitely smart of them. I guess it's because of that whole 100 price drop outrage. I would be pretty angry if bought the iPhone but a new one comes out a couple of weeks later. I really hope that they start selling them unlocked but you can get them cheaper with an AT&T contract.

As a side note I don't see anybody here posting any anti-Apple comments. Perhaps I missed something, like my morning coffee.

Who want's to bet $2 dollars Apple will announce a 3G iphone start taking Pre orders Soon???? & just say it will ship next month or so.
