The Sling Modem cable modem + Slingbox device we saw back in January is finally launching. The first network to carry it is EchoStar, which has a really tight relationship with Sling seeing as it purchased them last fall. With this, you'll be able to use the same box for your cable internet to surf and stream video to your portable devices. We're always happy when we can make two gadgets into one.

Always happy when we can make two gadgets into one? What about the guillotine chastity belt?
"We're always happy when we can make two gadgets into one."

You bet!! Phone+iPod+Internet commmunications device=iPhone
EchoStar is cable now?
Does this look like a Wii Fit or is it just me?
Yeah, whatever, now where's my SlingCatcher??
A cablecard slot and tuner would make this thing really cool.
I don't understand how Echostar will be the first to carry it?
It's a cable modem, so how will THAT work with satellite?
@ackthbbft:
Hiding somewhere with your SlingShot.
@ripfire4: Echostar split into 2 companies at the beginning of this year. Echostar Holding Corp. and Dish Network Corp. Dish Network Corp. provides the Satellite TV services while Echostar Holding Corp. maintains the satellites, broadcast centers, etc ... In addition they develop and distribute set top boxes and have the Sling portion of the business. Various articles published when this was announced alluded to the fact that we may start seeing STB's for other providers in the future. This looks like it may be the first one.

Unless it's a HD-DVD player/16" black and white television set
@bobdobbs:
It would almost be what Moxi almost is.
(Somehow I love how that sentence is constructed. It's like almost but not entirely unlike tea.)
It's great to see one company ruin a great idea.
Thanks Comcast!
It looks like the bottom of the foam plate you get when you buy raw meats at the grocery store...
@robg: Now that's what I call a response.
@shamoononon: it seems i'm responding to everything you say, but yea, that's the exact same thing i thought too! interesting..
Wireless?
Actually the post is a little confused. EchoStar does own Sling Media, yes. And EchoStar is exhibiting the SlingModem at The Cable Show. But EchoStar is NOT a network and is NOT 'carrying' the SlingModem. They're exhibiting it as one of their hardware products that are available for cable MSOs to pick up. The SlingModem is being presented to the network operators as a product they might wish to carry.
(Disclaimer: I work for Sling Media now.)
and where the hell is the tr-50?
